Book Descriptions:
I was taught the structure of the little-known Japanese haiku by my class teacher, Mrs Elaine Bray, an Englishwoman, who was also the English teacher for the Standard in Standard V at Herschel in 1985. I have always found this particular structure of five syllables followed by seven syllables, followed again by five syllables, making up a total of seventeen syllables very handy for encapsulating an observation, be it about nature or a passing psychological state of my own being. It has always been a challenge to see whether I can fit in what I want to say in seventeen syllables structured in this way - a bit of a game, if you like.
