N the service of the Sanctuary, music may be regarded as the language of that portion in which the Psalms are used. Elsewhere it is employed as an art, and for its own sake in the house of God it is only an auxiliary; all-important in its place, nevertheless secondary and subservient. Neither music nor audible utterance is essential to praise: it is the praise of the heart with which God is well pleased. At the same time, there is reason to believe that God is not indifferent to those songs in which the redeemed in glory praise the Lamb; and being the ordained and recognised medium by which the service of praise is conducted in the Sanctuary, it is incumbent on all worshippers to lay their best gift on the altar.
