The charred and near lifeless deckhand lying in the center of the raft had just enough life remaining, to request a watery grave. The deckhand knew it cruel to ask a couple of mid-western kids to end his suffering. Worse, however, was the thought of his bloated and stench-ridden corpse, haunting the boys as they awaited rescue—if it came. On more than one occasion, their father had told the two boys that life isn’t fair. That advice came before eleven-year-old Nick would shoot and kill a crazy man—a man needing killing by the way. And, it came before the boys would watch a friend bleed to death as they desperately paddled out of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, in northern Minnesota. What the hell does fair mean anyway? Fair, is in the eyes of the beholder. Fair, is for kids on a playground picking teammates for kickball. Other than that, the term fair should be stowed for those naive enough to honestly believe it exists—those without pain or unfamiliar with Hell’s clutches. On this day, as Josh and Nick cradle the dying man in their arms, their chests pinned tightly to the raft’s float, tears streaming down their cheeks creating ripples upon the glass surface of the ocean, beginning to relax their hold—ask them if life is fair.
