St t. )PREFACE This volume includes the first part of a treatise covering the design, construction and management of power, heating and ventilating plants. For the convenience of the reader the work has been divided into sections, and the chapters so arranged as to form three volumes, each complete in itself. The matter contained in the following pages is intended to fully cover the design of small and medium size steam power plants. The fundamental elements of the subject are first considered in some detail, after which the various pieces of apparatus employed in power work are fully described. The later chapters are devoted to the selection of equipment for different conditions and the assembling of the same in the completed plant. No attempt has been made to cover central station work; only plants similiar to those found in manufactories, office buildings and institutions being considered. While care has been taken to treat the subject in a simple and concise manner, sufficient space has been devoted to the derivation of formulae and to the principles involved in the various methods of procedure, to make the work of value both to the student and practicing engineer. Special thanks are due to the editors of various magazines for permission to use material which has appeared over the authors name in their publications. As many of the chapters have been rewritten from several published articles upon similar subjects, it has been impossible to give suitable credit in the text, and for this reason it has seemed best to give references by chapters, as follows: American Electrician Chapters 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16.
