Unable to tolerate anything more popular than itself, the regime begins a brutal nationwide campaign to eradicate the practice. The police and judicial systems at every level are ordered to Destroy their reputations, exhaust them financially, eliminate them physically. Hongwei and her husband decide to write letters to government officials explaining the benefits of the practice, and they are promptly arrested and sentenced to a nightmarish year in one of China s hidden labor camps.
